Rodrygo Made His Choice Between Messi And Ronaldo
“Messi or Ronaldo? Ronaldo.”
In an interview in 2023, a video shared by Madrid Zone, Rodrygo was asked to choose between two legends, and he unhesitatingly picked former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi.
In 2019, The Brazilian Rodrygo moved from Santos FC to Real Madrid, a year after Ronaldo had left for Juventus. Though they never played together at the Bernabeu, the Real Madrid star has cited Ronaldo as his role model.
On the other hand, Rodrygo has had a controversial history with Lionel Messi, having played against him six times for both club and country. He faced Messi twice while at Barcelona, with Real Madrid winning one match and drawing the other. Moreover, during Messi’s time at Paris Saint-Germain, where he faced Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 for the 2021-22 season the two of them faced each other again. PSG lost 3-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1-0.
Rodrygo And Messi’s Other Meetings
Rodrygo and Messi have clashed twice on the international stage, once in a friendly match and again during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, where they had a heated exchange on the field.
Rodrygo’s teammate Vinicius Jr had a different stance over his choice of Ronaldo over Messi, when asked to make his choice a year before he had joined Real Madrid in 2018.

In an interview in 2017 with El Chiringuito TV , when Vini Jr was asked to make a pick between Messi and Ronaldo. Vini Jr unhesitatingly chose Messi over Ronaldo. He also called former Barcelona star Neymar as his idol in football.
Inspired By Ronaldo
“I am inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo because I’ve watched all of his games and he marked an era at the club. He’s an idol for me”, Vini said.
Although he chose Messi over Ronaldo still he idolizes the Portuguese international, especially after he inherits his No 7 shirt at Real Madrid.
