Meta’s AI has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, according to two employees speaking to The Information.

This milestone places Meta in close competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which recently reached 200 million weekly users.

Meta’s AI, integrated across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, is used by around 40 million daily active users for tasks such as text-based assistance and image generation.

The growing user base highlights Meta’s strategic move to release open-source AI models, enabling researchers to customise these tools.

This rapid growth puts Meta and OpenAI head-to-head in the AI race, with both companies innovating at a fast pace.

However, this competition is raising concerns about antitrust implications and safety risks. Regulators and scientists are closely monitoring the situation as the AI landscape evolves.

Meta’s Strategic AI Integration Across Platforms

Meta’s approach to AI is distinct, involving the deployment of AI capabilities across its major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.

This integration not only enhances user engagement but also allows Meta to leverage its vast user base to refine and improve its AI models.

By making its models open-source, Meta is fostering a collaborative environment where researchers can customise and advance AI technology, potentially driving further innovation in the field.

Challenges and Implications in the AI Race

As Meta and OpenAI vie for dominance in the AI space, several challenges and implications arise.

The rapid growth of AI-powered applications raises questions about data privacy, user safety, and the concentration of power within a few tech giants.

Regulatory bodies are increasingly scrutinising these developments to ensure that competition remains fair and that the technologies are used responsibly.

The ongoing rivalry between Meta and OpenAI is likely to shape the future of AI, with significant impacts on technology and society.
