The New Orleans Saints have officially parted ways with head coach Dennis Allen following a challenging start to the 2024 NFL season. The team’s decision comes after a seventh straight defeat, this time at the hands of divisional rival Carolina Panthers.
With the team now at 2-7, Saints owner Gayle Benson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, praising Allen’s commitment to the organisation.
“Dennis has been part of our organisation for many years. He is highly regarded within the NFL,” Benson said in her statement. “He has been extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us.” Despite her regard, Benson felt that it was the right time to make a change, wishing Allen well in his future.
From Assistant to Head Coach: Allen’s Journey with the Saints
Allen’s journey with the Saints has been long and notable. He first joined the team in 2006, working as a defensive assistant and contributing to the Saints’ Super Bowl win in 2009.
After a brief stint as defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos and a challenging period as head coach for the Oakland Raiders, Allen returned to the Saints in 2015. Serving as defensive coordinator for six years, he was promoted to head coach in 2022, replacing Sean Payton.
Unfortunately, despite high hopes, Allen’s tenure as head coach failed to meet expectations. The Saints have struggled to reach the playoffs under his leadership, and a disappointing 18-25 record over three seasons sealed his fate. This season’s 2-7 start further underscored the team’s need for a new direction.
Interim Head Coach Darren Rizzi Prepares for the Falcons
In the interim, special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi will take on head coaching duties. Rizzi, known for his experience and leadership, now faces the challenge of rallying the Saints as they prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 10.
The team’s early wins showcased offensive potential, but injuries and a series of close losses have hindered their season.
New Orleans aims to reset under Rizzi’s guidance. Benson’s decision signals a fresh start, and with the season still underway, the Saints hope to regain momentum. While Allen’s departure marks the end of an era, the organisation remains optimistic about what’s ahead.
