Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been fined $14,069 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct during the team’s recent game against the Buffalo Bills. The fine was imposed after Mahomes made a controversial “gun gesture” while celebrating a fourth-quarter touchdown in the 30-21 loss. This marks the first defeat of the season for the Chiefs, ending their undefeated streak under Mahomes’ leadership.
Mahomes Fined for “Violent Gesture” During Touchdown Celebration
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received a fine of $14,069 from the NFL for an unsportsmanlike gesture he used to celebrate his fourth-quarter touchdown to tight end Noah Gray in a match against the Buffalo Bills. He shot across his fingers like a gun after scoring. The league made that particular gesture unacceptable and gave him the penalty.
Mahomes, thinking about the defeat, was still optimistic. “We feel like we can play better, so we will get back to work and try to use this as a spark so that we can be a better football team in the end,” he said. The Chiefs were defeated for the first time since December 2023, closing off an undefeated season.
Andy Reid Fined for Criticizing Officials; Chiefs Eye Bounce-Back
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was also fined $100,000 for publicly calling out an official after that same game. Their loss to the Bills by a margin of 30-21 was a rough turning point for their season, but Mahomes and Reid both gave credit to the opponent. Mahomes said, “It’s going to take your best football to beat great football teams. they went out there and beat us.”
Despite the loss, Mahomes believes something positive can be learned from it. “I’m hoping that [losing] is a benefit,” he said. “We were just coming away with these wins at the end of the game.” With the team now back to facing the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 24, they’ll look to regroup.
