Controversy regarding the result
Argentina lost 1-2 to a determined Morocco team on the first day of play that saw fan protests disrupting the match after an equalizer in added time. The protests caused a two-hour suspension before resuming. Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi scored both goals, with Giovanni Simeone later pulling one back for Argentina. In the 16th minute of added time it looked as if Christian Medina scored an equalizer for the 2008 olympic champions, but the goal was ruled out when the game resumed ad the teams came back to play.
“The biggest circus I have ever seen in my life,”says the Argentina Coach
Recently, Messi, 37, guided the Albiceleste to the Copa America 2024 championship. Messi was not included in the Olympic team since the Games only allow three senior players in the roster in addition to the U-23 team. Messi sustained an ankle injury during the final. In the Argentina team, Alvarez, Nicolas Otamendi, and Geronimo Rulli make up the senior trio.
Messi, not part of the second-string Argentine side, took to Instagram to post a story with the Spanish word ‘Insolito’. The word translates to ‘unusual’ or ‘uncommon’ in English.
Coach of Argentina, Javier Mascherano, referred to the entire situation as a circus. After the game, he remarked, “The biggest circus I have ever seen in my life.”
