In response to antisemitic attacks on Israeli soccer fans, Amsterdam has announced a three-day protest ban. The violence, which took place after a Europa League match between Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax, has drawn widespread condemnation.
The Dutch police launched an investigation, and Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema has expressed shame over the incidents.
Mayor Condemns “Antisemitic” Attacks and Enhances Security
During a press conference, Mayor Halsema condemned the “criminal” attacks, describing them as shameful and antisemitic.
According to her, the assaults involved “hit-and-run” tactics by attackers on scooters targeting Maccabi supporters. Authorities have since increased police presence, prohibiting face coverings and any objects that could disrupt public order. Halsema emphasised the importance of making Amsterdam safe for all residents and visitors, particularly the Jewish community.
Rising Tensions Before and After the Match
Tensions between fans escalated after videos emerged showing Maccabi fans chanting anti-Arab slurs and other inflammatory acts.
Although the game itself ended without violence in the stadium, disturbances erupted throughout the city, resulting in dozens of injuries.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof called the attacks “horrific,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likened them to Kristallnacht, adding urgency to the calls for strict action against the perpetrators.
