Ukraine’s Rare  incursion

On the Saturday night of 10 August, Zelensky virtually addressed and revealed  that Ukraine’s forces were moving into  “the aggressor’s territory.”

Ukrainian forces have launched their most significant advance into Russian territory since the invasion began in February 2022, moving over 10 kilometers (six miles) into Russia’s Kursk region following a surprise attack on Tuesday. This operation, involving up to 1,000 troops with tanks and armored vehicles, has led to the capture of several villages and threatened the town of Sudzha.

In response, Russia has imposed a “counter-terror” regime in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk, leading to the evacuation of over 76,000 residents and increased security measures. Fighting continues, with Kursk Governor Aleksei Smirnov reporting injuries from a missile strike that hit a high-rise building. Additionally, Ukrainian drone attacks have been reported in Voronezh and Belgorod regions.

A video has surfaced showing Ukrainian soldiers at a Gazprom gas facility in Sudzha, though it’s unclear if they have full control of the town. Moscow has deployed reinforcements to counter the Ukrainian advance, but verification of the situation is still pending.

Casualty

Clashes continue in the region, with Kursk Governor Aleksei Smirnov reporting injuries from a Ukrainian missile strike late Saturday. Debris from a downed missile landed on a high-rise building in Kursk, causing injuries to 13 people. Additionally, Ukrainian drone strikes were observed in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions, although no injuries have been reported from these attacks.

In Kyiv, a 35-year-old man and his four-year-old son tragically lost their lives when a rocket fragment hit residential buildings. Three other individuals, including a 13-year-old child, sustained injuries. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has advised residents to take shelter as air defense systems engaged in response to the assaults.

The UN nuclear agency has urged both Russia and Ukraine to exercise extreme caution as the conflict draws closer to the Kursk nuclear power plant, one of Russia’s major nuclear facilities. IAEA Director Rafael Grossi has called for steps to avoid any possible nuclear accidents.
