According to the commander of the air force on Friday, American specialists have joined an ongoing investigation in Ukraine into why an F-16 warplane that the nation received from its Western allies crashed earlier this week during a Russian assault. “A detailed analysis is already being conducted,” according to Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on Telegram, regarding the reason behind the downing of the fighter jet on Monday, the day Russia launched a significant bombardment of missiles and drones at Ukraine.

Reporting of the ‘crash’

In the article, Oleshchuk stated, “We must carefully understand what happened, what the circumstances are, and whose responsibility it is.” After they arrived in Ukraine at the end of last month, this crash was the first F-16 loss ever documented there. It is thought that at least six of the warplanes were supplied by European nations.

Given Russia’s formidable air force and advanced air defense systems, military analysts predict that the jets won’t significantly alter the course of the conflict. However, supersonic jets—which NATO nations may deploy to carry contemporary weapons—were hailed by Ukrainian leaders as a chance to counter Russia’s air superiority.

In the meantime, Ukrainian soldiers are maintaining their ground in the Kursk border region of western Russia following a recent incursion, while the Russian army is moving slowly but steadily closer to eastern Ukraine. The deputy head of the Ukraine parliament’s defense committee, a legislator, came under harsh fire from Oleshchuk, the director of the country’s air force, for her assertion that a Patriot air defense system brought down the F-16. Unspecified numbers of US-made systems have been sent to Ukraine.

Russia vs Ukraine dispute and the consequences

Mariana Bezuhla requested retribution for the person(s) who made the mistake and supported her accusation with anonymous sources. Bezuhla was accused by Oleshchuk of disparaging the air force and American arms makers, and he expressed his desire that Bezuhla would be held accountable for her statements. The air force did not outright dispute that a Patriot missile struck the F-16.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, some military hardware supplied by the West to Ukraine would inevitably be lost in the conflict. “Any loss among Ukraine’s already limited allotment of Western-provided F-16s and trained pilots will have an outsized impact on Ukraine’s ability to operate F-16s in the near term as part of its combined air defense umbrella or in an air-to-ground support role,” the Washington-based think tank added.

Russia fired a ballistic missile and eighteen Shahed drones toward Ukraine overnight, according to the air force. Twelve drones were reported destroyed, and four more were shot down before they could reach their objective. According to the regional administration, the attack in Sumy, the capital of the region sharing the same name with Russia’s Kursk region, resulted in the death of one woman and the ignition of a fire.
