Vice President Kamala Harris recently opened up about a pivotal moment in her political career during her first television interview since becoming the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee. In a candid conversation with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris recounted the phone call from President Joe Biden that changed the trajectory of her campaign.
The Call That Changed Everything
On July 21, while spending time with her family and enjoying breakfast, Harris received a call from President Biden. “It was Joe Biden, and he told me what he had decided to do. And I asked him, ‘Are you sure?’ And he said, ‘Yes,’” Harris recalled. This moment marked a significant turning point, as Biden announced he would not seek re-election, thus paving the way for Harris to step into the spotlight as the Democratic nominee.
Harris emphasized that her initial concern was not about her own candidacy but about Biden’s well-being. “My first thought was about him,” she stated, reflecting the deep respect she holds for the president. Following the call, Biden publicly endorsed Harris, solidifying her position as the party’s candidate.
Addressing Policy Changes and Criticism
Throughout the interview, Harris faced questions about her evolving stance on various issues, including her previous support for banning fracking. When asked about these changes, she asserted, “My values have not changed. So that is the reality of it.” She explained that her extensive travels across the country as vice president have informed her understanding of the American people’s needs, emphasizing the importance of building consensus and solving problems collaboratively.
Despite her efforts to engage with voters, Harris has faced criticism from opponents who claim she is avoiding tough questions. Republican candidate J.D. Vance accused her of running a “basement campaign,” suggesting that she prioritizes scripted events over genuine interactions with the press. In response, Harris highlighted her commitment to transparency, noting that she has participated in numerous interviews and discussions throughout her vice presidency.
Campaign Momentum and Upcoming Challenges
Harris’s campaign has gained momentum since she officially took over as the Democratic nominee, with a series of rallies designed to reintroduce her to the electorate. Alongside her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris has filled arenas across the country, generating enthusiasm among supporters.
However, the road ahead is not without challenges. Harris is set to face former President Donald Trump in a highly anticipated debate on September 10, a platform where she has historically excelled. Additionally, two vice-presidential debates between Walz and Vance are scheduled for September 18 and October 1, further intensifying the campaign atmosphere.
