China’s Ministry of State Security has issued a warning to young students to be cautious of foreign intelligence agents who might lure them into espionage under false pretences. The Ministry, which launched its WeChat account on September 4, 2024, stated that these agents often pose as “handsome men and beautiful women” to manipulate students and obtain sensitive information.
According to the Ministry, intelligence officials have been targeting students involved in scientific research by posing as university scholars or corporate employees. They offer high-paying part-time jobs and engage students in market research or academic exchanges. Once trust is established, students are tricked into illegal activities, such as gathering sensitive military data.
Romantic Traps in Espionage
The Chinese security agency highlights that these spies often disguise themselves as affectionate partners.
They show concern in daily life, offering support and assistance to gain the student’s trust.
Through fake romantic relationships, these agents manipulate students into more covert operations. The Ministry emphasised that students need to remain vigilant and avoid falling into these traps, which threaten national security.
China’s National Security Crackdown
In recent years, Chinese authorities have intensified efforts to address national security threats.
The government has been making public several espionage cases uncovered by security agencies.
The Ministry stressed the importance of protecting sensitive information and urged students to stay cautious of foreign entities, especially those offering enticing opportunities or forming personal relationships.
Espionage History
Espionage has long used attractiveness and seduction, known as “honey traps,” to gather intelligence across nations.
Countries like Russia, with the KGB using “swallows” and “ravens,” and Israel’s Mossad employing attractive agents, have leveraged this tactic.
The CIA and MI6 also relied on charm in their operations, while Germany’s Abwehr and spies like Mata Hari famously used seduction during wartime.
China and France have similarly used these tactics to target diplomats, businessmen, and officials.
Throughout history, attractiveness has been a powerful tool in espionage, helping agents extract sensitive information.
