Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visa has been revoked by the US, according to insider sources. This comes amid reports that Western nations, including the US, sought her ousting from power.
Hasina, who resigned and fled to India, is currently at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad. The UK is not prepared to grant her refuge, and her sister, Rehana, may leave for the UK soon.
The protests escalated into violent unrest
Sheikh Hasina has been arranged to leave Dhaka due to anti-government protests against her reservation policies. The protests have led to over 440 deaths and vandalism.
She was met by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior military officials upon her arrival in India. The Indian Air Force monitored her flight, deploying Rafale fighter jets.
The volatile situation in Bangladesh, characterized by unrest and uncertainty, prompted the military to establish an interim government, which is being spearheaded by the esteemed Nobel laureate, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Following her unexpected resignation, Hasina sought out to India for safe passage, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament on Tuesday. In the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar made a suo motu testimony and stated that Hasina was given permission to visit India on “very short notice.”
The UK has currently refused to provide asylum to Sheikh Hasina
Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, had initially planned to remain in India until her British visa was approved. However, the newly elected Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer, made a decision to deny her asylum.
Under the UK’s updated policy, individuals seeking political asylum now must first spend a specified period residing in a designated host country for evaluation before being considered for asylum in the UK. This change aims to streamline the asylum process and ensure that each applicant’s case is thoroughly reviewed to determine eligibility for protection within the UK’s borders.
