A caracal, an exotic and endangered feline native to Africa and Asia, was safely captured in a suburban Chicago neighborhood after being on the loose for nearly 24 hours. The large cat was found hiding under a resident’s deck in Hoffman Estates, where local authorities, assisted by animal sanctuary employees, took it into custody. The caracal’s origins remain unknown, but it is now set to be relocated to a sanctuary for proper care.

Exotic Caracal Found in Suburban Chicago

Residents of Hoffman Estates, a Chicago suburb, were on high alert after sightings of an exotic caracal in their neighborhood. The elusive cat, native to Africa and Asia, was finally located hiding under a resident’s deck nearly 24 hours after it was first reported. Officers from the Hoffman Estates Police Department swiftly responded to capture the animal, using a large cage to secure it safely. Eyewitnesses captured video of the caracal leaping from side to side in the cage before it was taken into custody.

The caracal, described as a tan-colored cat weighing between 20 and 40 pounds, was unharmed during the capture. Officials confirmed that The Valley of the Kings Sanctuary and Retreat in Wisconsin would be taking in the wild cat. The sanctuary will ensure the caracal receives appropriate care, far removed from suburban life, allowing it to thrive in a more suitable environment.

Caracal’s Origin and Status as an Endangered Species

It remains unclear how the caracal came to roam the streets of suburban Chicago, as the species is not native to the U.S. The Hoffman Estates Police Department had urged residents to avoid approaching or feeding the animal during the search. While caracals are rarely seen in the United States, some are kept illegally as pets due to their striking appearance and exotic status.

Caracals are nocturnal hunters, preying primarily on small mammals and birds. According to the San Diego Zoo, these animals are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching in their native regions. This recent incident highlights the potential dangers of exotic pet ownership, particularly involving endangered species that require specific environments and care. Authorities continue to investigate the origins of the caracal.
