How Electric Eels Produce Electricity?  

Looking closer at their anatomy reveals that the amazing capacity of electric eels to produce electricity is due to three distinct organs nested within them. Known variously as the main organ, the Hunter’s organ, and the Sachs organ, these biological wonders are each made up of approximately 6,000 distinct cells known as electrolytes.

What is this electrolytes’ purpose? When the eel perceives a threat or attacks a possible meal, they both release power simultaneously. “Living batteries are what electric eels are like.” Fish at the Natural History Museum in London are governed by stacks of modified muscle cells called electrocytes, which have a positive and a negative side, according to Dr. Rupert Collins, Senior Curator of Fishes.

Electric eels are living, breathing electricity generators because, upon activation, their cells release an electrical impulse into the surrounding water.

The electric eel’s ability to produce electric shocks without suffering harm is beyond the comprehension of scientists.  Nonetheless, it’s thought that the majority of the electrical current surrounding the eel is absorbed by the water. According to a study, eels can typically produce about 600 volts of electricity, but occasionally they can produce up to 860 volts. An electric eel shock can cause serious breathing problems as well as cardiac arrest in humans.

In addition to being strong predators, electric eels are essential to the equilibrium of their environments.
