A 36-year-old woman from southern Thailand has endured 18 years of severe pain due to a needle accidentally left inside her body during childbirth. Despite multiple attempts by doctors to retrieve it, the needle remained lodged in her lower abdomen, causing ongoing discomfort and financial strain.
Recently, an X-ray revealed the needle’s location, but surgery to remove it has been repeatedly postponed. The woman, struggling with the costs of frequent hospital visits, has sought assistance from the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, which is helping coordinate her treatment.
Medical Malpractice and Its Lingering Consequences
A Thai woman suffered from chronic pain for 18 years. The cause of this pain was the presence of a needle inside her vagina.
It was left there because during suturing, a doctor had accidentally dropped a needle and could not retrieve it before continuing with the procedure. Due to the lack of proper care, it caused continuous extreme lower abdominal ache.
The woman has seen the doctor for over ten years; however, no previous X-ray of her body ever confirmed that there was a needle stuck in her body.
Even though this object moves around, it has postponed numerous surgeries to remove it, and this has borne a financial and emotional burden on the woman’s family.
The Monitory and Emotional Burden on the Family
The patient is a poor woman from southern Thailand. She has been coming regularly to the hospital for follow-up care.
Great pressure on finance has been placed on her. Even though the Pavena Foundation has helped in arranging transport and visits to the hospital, she and her family continue to experience immense strain from the current medical condition.
While waiting for surgery, the female patient continually faces the psychological and physiological impact of having such a medical condition left unattended.
Whether she would pick up the malpractice lawsuit only serves to compound her already complicated situation.
