A tremendous progress
Last year, the US and South Korea together created a Nuclear Consultative Group to strengthen their communication on nuclear operations. As per findings US has promised to use all its power and nuclear weapons to save south korea, if it is being attacked but faced suspicions that it lacks planning on how it would exercise its extended deterrence for its Asian ally.
On Thursday meeting for NATO summit in Washington, US, President Joe Biden and South Korea, President Yook Suk Yeol praises and calls “ tremendous progress” that their countries alliance has made a year after creating a joint Nuclear Consultative Group
On the same day, The two leaders’ defense officials signed “ the U.S.-RoK Guidelines for Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Operations on the Korean Peninsula”
Nuclear Consultative Group: All you need to know
A Nuclear Consultative Group is a committee established to coordinate and consulate on the nuclear weapons policies. The structure, planning, purpose and functions everything depends on the participating entities. They provide an environment to make strategies related to nuclear deterrence, arms control and disarmament. Additionally members can discuss the threat among themselves.
NATO Nuclear Planning Group is a senior body where the entities discuss and coordinate their nuclear planning in a safe and credible environment.
North Korea: A threat to south korea
North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world and they have conducted nuclear tests several times, developed nuclear warheads.
Additionally, South Korea has no nuclear weapons whereas North Korea frequently engages in missile testing and military exercises.
US and South Korea’s statements
“The president underscored that the Guidelines document provides a solid foundation for enhancing U.S.-ROK extended deterrence cooperation in an integrated manner” a joint statement by Biden and Yoon.
“ The key is how to integrate South Korea’s conventional weapons and America’s nuclear weapons to launch joint, massive retaliation against North Korea, when it carries out nuclear strikes on South Korea” said Kim Yeol Soo from South Korea.
