On Friday, Prachanda lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, Ram Chandra Paudel, president of Nepal called on political parties to stake claim to form a new government till Sunday evening to prove the majority.
What were the key reasons for the loss of PM in no confidence motion?
The major reason for the loss of Prime Minister Pusha Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ in no confidence motion is due to the withdrawal of support from the coalition party, former prime minister K P Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML withdrew its major support.
As per recent reports on vote , only 63 of the 275 members of the house of representatives backed Prachanda, however, 194 opposed and one abstained. This leads to the loss of the PM.
Why is the President looking to the experts for the guidance and formation of the government in Nepal?
Nepal has a long history of political instability and a short- lived government. The President consulted the experts as he wanted political stability and a formation of stable government due to the uncertainty and complex political situation.
On July 12, President Ram Chandra Paudel startsd consulting with constituents and legal experts along with PM Prachnda, asking him to hold the fort as a caretaker till a new government is placed.
“As HoR Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire informed the president that the Prime Minister lost floor test in the house on Friday, the President asked him to continue as a caretaker Prime Minister as per Article 77-3 of the Constitution” According to a source
The source added “In this regard, President Paudel held consultations with legal experts on how constitutional provisions could be employed towards the formation of a new government.”
