Following Colombia’s narrow 1-0 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, social media footage captured Uruguayan players entering the stands and engaging in a physical confrontation with Colombian fans.
Star striker Darwin Núñez and defender Ronald Araújo were reportedly at the center of the melee. Uruguay captain José María Giménez later claimed the players were acting in defence of their families who were allegedly being harassed by Colombian fans.
The tensions appeared to carry over from on-field clashes between players and staff from both teams following the final whistle.
CONMEBOL Vows to Crack Down on Violence
In a statement released on Thursday, CONMEBOL confirmed it had opened an official investigation “to understand the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved in the acts of violence that occurred at the end of the match.”
The statement further emphasised CONMEBOL’s commitment to upholding a violence-free sporting environment: “We want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration… It is unacceptable that an incident like this turns passion into violence. Therefore, no behavior that harms the sporting competition will be tolerated.”
