Robert Hernandez, a 38-year-old apparatus engineer with Cal Fire, was arrested on September 20, 2024, for allegedly starting several forest fires in Sonoma County, California. These fires occurred during a particularly challenging wildfire season, with nearly one million acres burned in the state this year.
California’s Major Wildfire
California’s largest wildfire this year, the Park Fire, is now 40% contained after burning over 670 square miles. Started by arson on July 24 near Chico, it has quickly become the state’s fourth-largest wildfire.
Cal Fire reported minimal activity overnight, with firefighters focused on containment and ensuring community safety for repopulation. Weather conditions have improved, helping efforts to suppress the fire.
The blaze has primarily affected Butte and Tehama counties, destroying 641 structures and damaging 52. A man from Chico has been arrested in connection with the arson.
Other wildfires in California are being contained, except for the Boise Fire, which remains at zero containment.
Cal Fire’s Response
Cal Fire’s Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler expressed his dismay at the situation, stating, “I am appalled to learn one of our employees would violate the public’s trust and attempt to tarnish the tireless work of the 12,000 women and men of Cal Fire.”
Hernandez faces six felony counts and is currently being held on a $2 million bail. His court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, as the agency works to rebuild trust in the face of this troubling incident.
Broader Context of Wildfires in California
The arrest of a firefighter for arson highlights ongoing concerns about wildfire management in California.
This year, wildfires have devastated nearly three times more land than in the previous year, exacerbating environmental issues and raising questions about fire safety protocols.
Amidst these challenges, Cal Fire has announced a new joint venture aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving urban forests, with nearly $31 million allocated to 22 projects through the 2024 Inflation Reduction Act.
