Justin Welby Resigns Over Church Abuse Scandal

Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, resigned Tuesday over an abuse scandal. The scandal involves historic abuse at Christian summer camps from the 1970s. Welby said he feels “deep sorrow” over the Church’s failures.

As leader of 85 million Anglicans, he accepted responsibility. His decision follows the recent Makin Report, which found severe faults. The report criticised Welby’s lack of action on abuse prevention.

Volunteer John Smyth allegedly abused over 100 boys in camps. Smyth, a British lawyer, traumatised many, with lasting effects. “I take personal responsibility,” Welby stated in his resignation letter.

Resignation Reflects Accountability and Remorse

Welby’s resignation is seen as an act of accountability. His “shame” reflects the weight of the Church’s failures. “This decision shows the Church’s commitment to change,” he said.

Archbishop Stephen Cottrell called it “the honourable choice.” Cottrell emphasised victims’ rights and the Church’s duty to protect. Over a decade, Welby has faced many difficult issues.

He dealt with controversies on LGBTQ+ rights and women’s roles. However, his views clashed with conservative African churches.

New Archbishop Faces Big Challenges

The next Archbishop of Canterbury will face huge challenges. Church attendance is declining, down 20% since 2019. Welby’s successor must reunite a divided Anglican Communion.

Divisions exist between liberal and conservative churches globally. Several possible successors have emerged for this position. Graham Usher and Guli Francis-Dehqani are likely candidates.

Usher supports LGBTQ+ rights and environmental causes. Francis-Dehqani, born in Iran, would be the first female Archbishop.Welby’s resignation may mark a turning point for the Church. His departure emphasises the need for better safeguards. He expressed solidarity with abuse victims, saying, “I leave in sorrow.”

Smyth Scandal: Church Under Scrutiny

The Makin Report, released last week, reveals disturbing details. Smyth abused young boys, often with severe physical punishments. Smyth continued abusing when he moved to Africa in 1984.

The abuse reportedly continued until his death in 2018. The report said Church leaders knew of this in 2013. Critics argue reporting allegations earlier could have prevented more harm.

Welby stressed his commitment to regaining trust and accountability.
