Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold’s stunning freekick goal in England’s 3-1 win over Finland, Roy Keane criticised the defender’s performance, raising doubts about his defensive abilities.
Roy Keane Criticises Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Defense Despite England’s Win
In England’s 3-1 victory over Finland in the UEFA Nations League, Trent Alexander-Arnold faced criticism from Roy Keane despite scoring a spectacular freekick.
The match, held at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, saw England dominate with goals from Jack Grealish, Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice.
However, Keane targeted the Liverpool star for his defensive shortcomings, claiming that he would “get found out” against stronger teams.
Alexander-Arnold, playing left-back for the first time in his career, helped secure the win with a brilliant set-piece.
Still, Keane’s post-match comments on ITV were not forgiving, as he referred to Alexander-Arnold’s poor performance in a previous game against Greece, where his defensive capabilities were questioned. Keane’s harsh judgment overshadowed Alexander-Arnold’s contribution, despite the full-back winning three duels and performing four defensive actions in the match.
Lee Carsley’s Faith in Alexander-Arnold’s Versatility
England’s interim head coach, Lee Carsley, was more optimistic about Alexander-Arnold’s role in the team.
“There’s no surprises in terms of the quality he’s got and the areas of the pitch we can get him in. Trent’s quality speaks for itself. I do not see it that I have to make a space for him, he has more than earned his space. We do get bogged down by left-back, right-back but so long as he is in effective positions it is great to have him.”
Said Carsley.
After experimenting with him at left-back, Carsley emphasised his confidence in the player’s versatility and quality, noting that Alexander-Arnold’s positioning allowed him to be more effective.
While former coach Gareth Southgate had tried him in midfield during Euro 2024 with mixed results, Carsley saw potential in his ability to adapt.
Carsley dismissed concerns over fixed roles, explaining that Alexander-Arnold’s technical skills could be used in various positions, regardless of whether he plays on the left or right.
His praise suggests that Alexander-Arnold may continue to feature in unconventional positions for England.
