The ESI Film Festival 2024 has revealed its winners, showcasing remarkable storytelling in the gaming and esports sectors. Held at the MEO Arena as part of ESI Lisbon, the festival highlighted films that explore the intersection of gaming, culture, and personal journeys. This year, a total prize pool of €6,000 was awarded, reflecting the growing significance of film in the esports industry.

Best Film Winners

The ESI Film Festival is an annual event organised by Esports Insider (ESI), designed to showcase and celebrate films and stories from the gaming and esports industries. 

The festival provides a platform for filmmakers to explore the cultural, emotional, and social impact of gaming through their work. 

It features categories like Best Film and Best Student Film, encouraging both professional and emerging filmmakers to participate.

The top prize for Best Film went to “Chuck & Fern,” directed by Henry Alexander Kelly. 

This fantasy film tells the story of a heroic swordsman and a D-List villain grappling with their existential crises while facing a greater calling. 

The second place was awarded to “Live Legendary: Launders,” a documentary that chronicles the inspiring life of Counter-Strike caster Launders, focusing on his upbringing and the resilience he developed along the way.

Best Student Film Winners

In the Best Student Film category, “C++,” directed by Bashar Taha Abduljabbar, won first place.

The film follows Yassin, a programmer seeking justice after losing his wife to medical malpractice. 

Set within a virtual reality game he created, it explores themes of justice and the fine line between reality and illusion. 

The second place went to “Zara – My Game,” which documents former professional windsurfer Zara Horton’s journey into the esports world, showcasing her transition and competitive spirit.

The judging panel, consisting of industry leaders, ensured that each entry was evaluated for its originality and narrative strength. 

This year’s festival emphasised the cultural impact of gaming, furthering ESI’s mission to bridge the gap between film and esports.
