The grand finals will be held at VOV Gaming in Riyadh, further solidifying Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a key player in the global esports industry.

ESL Saudi Challenge: A New Milestone for Esports in Saudi Arabia

The launch of the ESL Saudi Challenge marks a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning esports scene. For the first time, an ESL-branded tournament will take place in the country, showcasing Saudi talent on a global stage. The tournament is set to feature players competing in Overwatch 2, one of the most popular esports titles. With the competition kicking off on October 18th and running until December 7th, the event will include open qualifications leading into a playoff phase, culminating in grand finals at the VOV Gaming venue in Riyadh.

The ESL Saudi Challenge offers a substantial $20,000 (~£15,301) prize pool, further cementing the event as a key moment for the local esports ecosystem. The tournament is designed to give local talent an opportunity to gain recognition and experience against top-level competition. Franck Guignery, Senior Vice President of the Middle East and Africa at ESL FACEIT Group, emphasized that this tournament is not just an event but a new chapter for Saudi Arabia’s esports journey, where aspiring players, professionals, and fans alike can immerse themselves in the action.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Role in the Global Esports Industry

Saudi Arabia has become a hotspot for esports in 2024, with various initiatives driving the industry forward. The ESL Saudi Challenge comes in the wake of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Saudi Esports Federation and MOONTON Games in August, aimed at furthering the development of esports within the country. This strategic focus on gaming is part of the country’s larger efforts to diversify its economy and bolster its position in the global esports industry. In addition, prominent Korean esports organization Gen.G announced in August its plans to establish a dedicated esports hub in Riyadh, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s growing significance in the space.

The growth of the esports industry in Saudi Arabia is also reflected in the involvement of global leaders like ESL FACEIT Group, which appointed Adam Apicella as Senior Vice President of Esports for North America. The continued investment from international organizations underscores the importance of Saudi Arabia as a new epicenter for esports. With increasing infrastructure and opportunities, Saudi players are now better positioned to make an impact in international competitions while helping to build a thriving local gaming community.
