The popular Netflix series Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss, who plays Pope, recently shared how excited he is to finally get a solo moment with co-star Madelyn Cline. For the pair, who have been friends for almost five years but had never had a one-on-one scene until the most recent season, this was a huge turning point. The experience was “really fun,” Daviss said in an interview with PEOPLE, highlighting their on- and off-screen compatibility.
A Long-Awaited Moment
In the final episode of Part 1 of Season 4, Daviss and Cline’s characters find themselves trapped in a crypt beneath a Charleston church while searching for clues related to Blackbeard’s treasure. This intense scenario not only showcased their acting skills but also highlighted their friendship. “It was so fun being with Maddie on it,” Daviss remarked. “We have a lot of chemistry just as friends, and playing off each other was really easy”. The scene involved crawling through tight spaces and dealing with rats, which added an element of challenge and excitement to their performance.
The actors thought about how rarely, despite their strong friendship, they had shared screen time. According to Daviss, they frequently talked about how Pope and Sarah Cameron’s friendship seemed to them and whether it was similar to their own friendship. Because of their self-examination, they were able to give their characters a sense of realism and relatability through their interactions.
Behind the Scenes Dynamics
Daviss and Cline both recognized the special relationships that have developed among the Outer Banks group since the show’s launch in 2019. Daviss discussed how, once they put on their character’s costumes, the transition from friendships in real life to connections on screen is really smooth. He did, however, laughly recount instances in which actors unintentionally addressed one another by their true names during difficult sequences.
Cline also shared her thoughts on the filming process, joking about her discomfort with confined spaces and her aversion to rats. Despite these challenges, she found joy in the collaborative nature of their work. The camaraderie among the cast has undoubtedly contributed to the show’s success, allowing them to tackle complex storylines while maintaining a supportive environment.
