Ted Danson, the iconic actor known for his comedic roles in Cheers and The Good Place, is embracing age and creativity with renewed enthusiasm. The 76-year-old star appeared at the Los Angeles premiere of his new Netflix series, A Man on the Inside, where he spoke candidly about his lifelong passion for acting.
Danson expressed that walking through studio gates still fills him with the same excitement he felt decades ago. “I feel the same joy I did in my late twenties,” he shared, emphasizing how much he treasures the experience of being on set.
Danson’s new role as Charles, a retired man turned amateur private investigator, is particularly meaningful. Based on Maite Alberdi’s 2020 documentary The Mole Agent, A Man on the Inside explores ageing, humour, and reinvention. “What is it like to be 76 and be funny, trying to be funny?” Danson reflected.
“Oh my God, my greatest joy is to be funny in every possible way I can.” Danson sees this character as an opportunity to show viewers that age shouldn’t limit creativity. He hopes the series will convey his belief that older people can still make an impact.
Rediscovering Joy in Work
For Danson, his role isn’t just another project—it’s a reminder of how fulfilling acting is for him. Reflecting on his career, he shared his gratitude for everyone involved in his productions, from crew members to fellow actors. “It makes me very happy,” he explained, “which is why I think I work a lot.”
His enthusiasm and dedication to his craft have kept him working and inspiring audiences for decades. Danson acknowledged that his age allows him to bring something special to his roles. He values the chance to explore ageing in a way that resonates with viewers of all ages.
Danson explained, “One of my joys…is to use my age and what I’m going through in life and explore that.” His perspective brings fresh humour and relatability to his latest character, inspiring fans who see him thriving in his later years.
A Message for All Ages
As Danson approaches the premiere of A Man on the Inside on November 21, he is eager for audiences to connect with the show’s message. “You can still do anything even at our age,” he said, expressing his belief that people should embrace life, regardless of their stage.
He emphasised, “Don’t call it quits, don’t wind down, keep going. The world needs you.” For Danson, this isn’t just a philosophy for his character; it’s a way of life.
In A Man on the Inside, Danson hopes to encourage viewers to live fully, sharing both laughter and wisdom as they age. By portraying Charles’s journey of reinvention, he hopes audiences will see that ageing is not a barrier but an opportunity. Danson believes that his work can help viewers of all ages find joy in every stage of life.
