Tamera Mowry-Housley has been a working mom for more than ten years, and she understands the challenges that come with it. “Some days, you feel like you can do everything perfectly. Other days, things just don’t go as planned,” she said in a recent interview with PEOPLE. As the mom of her son Aden, who is 11, and her daughter Ariah, who is 9, Mowry talks about the importance of being strong and flexible. “You need to accept things, change your approach, show love, and keep going,” she suggests. This attitude is also seen in her new Hallmark movie, Scouting for Christmas, where she plays Angela, a single mom who manages her job in real estate and her daughter Brooklyn’s activities outside of school.
Angela’s story is relatable to many working moms who find it hard to balance everything. “There are moms who can be there for every single moment, and that’s great. But there are also working moms who are trying to make a living and follow their dreams,” Mowry explains. Her character shows that it’s okay to focus on your family while also working on your career.
Navigating Judgment and Expectations
In Scouting for Christmas, Mowry’s character encounters challenges from a critical troop mom, a situation many mothers can relate to. “Angela stands her ground, making it clear she’s doing her best for her child,” Mowry explains. This moment conveys an important message: quality time is more valuable than quantity. “Are you really present with your child? That’s what truly matters,” she emphasizes. The film encourages mothers to accept their unique situations without feeling the need to adhere to strict standards.
Mowry has also experienced judgment from other mothers regarding her career choices. She refers to these critics as “momsters,” who think their approach is the only valid one. “What I appreciate about this film is that it illustrates the various paths to motherhood. The balance is never completely perfect,” she notes. Mowry hopes her character will motivate working moms to acknowledge their contributions, creating a culture of support instead of criticism.
A Celebration of Modern Family Dynamics
Cooper believes that the film Scouting for Christmas presents a modern perspective of life in families. “It is about a woman fighting to give a good life to her daughter after a separation,” she clarifies. Every relationship in the plot revolves around Angela and Brooklyn’s relationship, which is the story of love between a mother and a daughter. In one of the sweet subplots, Brooklyn’s relationship with her mother is further explored even as she tries to fix her with the owner of the bakery that she adores.
The actress also expresses her joy and gratitude at the opportunity of acting in a film where she is associated with a scouting group. “I’ve always wanted to be a Girl Scout,” Mowry admits and recalls how she longed to put on the outfit and boast ‘Scout’s honour.’ The movie, which will be released to the public on October 20, hopes to show the warmth that the Christmas season comes with, especially in regard to contemporary motherhood. “You know Hallmark and Mariah Carey literally make sure you are in the Christmas mood, ‘she adds, ensuring audiences are ready for an entertaining festive film.
Scouting for Christmas premieres on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, October 20, at 8 p.m. ET.
