Sophie Turner has recently opened up about the challenges she faces as a single mother to her two daughters, Willa and Delphine, following her divorce from Joe Jonas. In an interview with The Sunday Times, the actress described the emotional and practical difficulties of raising her children alone, stating, “It’s such a struggle being a single mother.” Her comments come as she promotes her new role in the upcoming series Joan, where she portrays a character navigating similar challenges.

The Reality of Single Motherhood

Turner highlighted the daily struggles that come with being a single parent, emphasizing the emotional toll it can take. She noted that while she is grateful for the support she receives, many single mothers do not have the same resources, making their journeys even more challenging.

In discussing her new role as Joan Hannington, a jewel thief and single mother, Turner reflected on how portraying this character resonated with her own experiences. She mentioned that stepping into Joan’s shoes provided her with strength during a tumultuous time in her life, allowing her to channel her personal struggles into the performance.

“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it,” Turner told The Sunday Times. “It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter.”

Public Perception of Single Mothers

Turner also addressed societal perceptions of single motherhood, noting that stigma still exists. She expressed concern over the shame often associated with being a working mother and how this perception has not significantly changed since the 1980s when her character’s story is set.

Turner addressed the social demands of motherhood while making jokes about how her character taught her how to do a “good ring swap in a handbag.” She remarked, “Being a mother carries a lot of shame.” You are ashamed when you get to work. You will be embarrassed if you skip work.

Despite the challenges she faces, Turner emphasized the importance of co-parenting amicably with Joe Jonas for the sake of their daughters. She expressed hope for creating a loving environment for Willa and Delphine as they navigate their new family dynamics. Turner’s reflections serve as a reminder of the resilience required in parenting and the ongoing journey of adapting to life’s changes
