Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Make Box Office History as First Married Couple to Rank No. 1 and No. 2 in 34 Years

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Make Box Office History as First Married Couple to Top Charts in 34 Years

Hollywood has a new power couple: Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. The dynamic duo has achieved a box office feat that hasn’t been seen in over three decades. With their respective films, “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “It Ends With Us,” occupying the top two spots at the domestic box office, Reynolds and Lively have solidified their status as entertainment royalty.

This remarkable achievement places them in elite company. The last married couple to enjoy such success was Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, whose films “Die Hard 2” and “Ghost” dominated the box office in 1990. Moore and Willis, who were married from 1987 to 2000, shared a lasting bond that extended beyond their personal lives. Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, and their films together, including “Mortal Thoughts,” “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America,” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” remain fan favorites.

 Box Office Showdown

This weekend, Lively’s “It Ends With Us” premiered to an impressive $50 million in ticket sales, exceeding initial projections of $25 million to $35 million. Meanwhile, Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” continued its strong performance, grossing $54.2 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to an astounding $494.3 million since its release on July 26, 2024.

The last married couple to achieve this box office success was Demi Moore and Bruce Willis in 1990, when their films “Ghost” and “Die Hard 2” topped the charts. At that time, “Ghost” earned $217.6 million, while “Die Hard 2” brought in $117.5 million, making them two of the highest-grossing films of the year.

A Unique Collaboration

Reynolds and Lively’s cinematic journey has been intertwined since their marriage in 2012. They have collaborated on projects such as “Green Lantern” in 2011 and Lively’s cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Notably, Reynolds contributed to a key scene in “It Ends With Us,” showcasing their creative partnership beyond their roles as actors.

“It Ends With Us,” based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, features Lively as Lily Bloom, a florist navigating a tumultuous love life. The film’s strong opening reflects a growing trend of successful female-led narratives in Hollywood, reminiscent of classic “women’s pictures” from the 1940s.

Supportive Partners

Despite the competitive nature of their box office showdown, Reynolds and Lively have publicly supported each other’s projects. At the premiere of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Lively donned a stunning Versace outfit inspired by her character, while Reynolds attended the premiere of “It Ends With Us” dressed in a suit that paid homage to Lively’s role.

Lively expressed her admiration for Reynolds, stating, “It’s the best” to have his support, highlighting the couple’s strong bond amid their professional endeavors. Their playful competitiveness has only added to the excitement surrounding their films.
