Nicole Kidman is opening up about navigating the complexities of grief, mortality, and emotional vulnerability in her 50s. In a candid interview with GQ, published on November 18, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on how aging has deepened her emotional experiences, particularly in the wake of losing her mother, Janelle, earlier this year.

As Kidman continues to embrace her roles as a mother, wife, and artist, she shares insights into the raw, unfiltered emotions that come with life’s inevitable challenges and transitions.

Nicole Kidman Throws Herself into Life’s Emotions at 50

Speaking to GQ, 57-year-old actress Nicole Kidman opened up about truly feeling the emotions now as she entered her 50s. The sense of mortality and connection has become something of a vice on her. “Mortality. Connection.

Life coming and hitting you,” she said of the emotions that she feels much more acutely now. According to Kidman, losing parents, raising children, and marriage have all made her feel more connected to life.

“I’m in all of those places. So life is, whew. It’s definitely a journey,” she added.  Kidman also remembered how she wasn’t permitting herself to indulge what she had hitherto classified as “weak” emotions.

“It hits you as you get older how … i woke up at 3 a.m.”. crying and gasping kind of thing. If you’re in it and not numbing yourself to it. And I’m in it. Fully in it,” she explained. For the actress, her mid-50s are about being fully present in life’s ups and downs, without shutting off her feelings.

Grieving Her Mother’s Loss: A Heartbreaking Journey

Having just lost her mother, Janelle, aged 84 in September, this is proving to be very testing for Kidman. She cut short her stay at the Venice International Film Festival so she could return to Australia and posted a statement on her behalf through Babygirl director Halina Reijn: “Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed”.

I am in shock. I must get to my family, but this prize is for her; she formed me, she guided me, and she made me. Added Kidman, “The collision of life and art is heart-breaking, and my heart is broken.”.

In October, Kidman talked about the bittersweet emotion of marking her career triumph as she was sorrowful because her mother missed the opportunity. Speaking on the red carpet at Lioness season 2 premiere, she exclaimed, “It’s been hard. It’s a hard road. I’m hanging in there.”

She also wished that her mother were there to join in the celebrations; she said, “I wish my mama was here. That’d be the one thing I’d say. Everything is great with work but I wish my mama were here.”.
