At just 19 years old, Miranda McKeon, known for her role in Anne With an E, faced a life-altering diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer. Now, at 22, she reflects on her journey through chemotherapy, radiation, and a double mastectomy, sharing how this challenging experience has profoundly changed the way she lives. McKeon emphasizes the importance of gratitude and awareness of life’s fleeting moments, as she embraces her newfound perspective as a cancer survivor.

The Diagnosis: A Life-Changing Moment

Miranda’s journey began with an unexpected diagnosis that left her feeling surreal. After discovering an unusual lump, she received the news that the cancer had already spread to her lymph nodes. This moment marked the start of a grueling battle against cancer, forcing her to confront fears and uncertainties that would shape her future.

“I kind of started freaking  out,” recalls Miranda, who’s best known for her role as Josie Pye in the Netflix series Anne with an E . “I was taught growing up that when you feel a lump in your breast that’s indicative of having breast cancer.”

Over the course of seven months, McKeon underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 25 sessions of radiation. Throughout this challenging period, she developed resilience and learned to navigate the emotional toll of treatment. Her determination to remain positive helped her cope with the physical and mental challenges she faced.

Embracing Life After Cancer

Now cancer-free since February 2022, Miranda reflects on how surviving breast cancer has changed her outlook on life. She expresses gratitude for the good that has come from her hardships and acknowledges a heightened awareness of the time we have on Earth. This renewed perspective has influenced how she approaches relationships and personal goals.

“There’s so much good happening in my life as a result of all the hardship,” says the now 22-year-old, who’s been cancer-free since February 2022 and currently lives in New York City. “I’ve become acutely aware of the time that we have on this earth — and that’s something that I’m so grateful for.”

McKeon candidly discusses the mental health challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis. She sought therapy to address anxiety and fears related to her health, emphasizing the significance of mental well-being in recovery. Her openness about these struggles serves as an important reminder of the holistic approach needed when dealing with serious illnesses.
