Now stepping into a new season where Colin matures into a romantic lead, Newton reflects on how the role has transformed him both on and off screen. During a recent interview for PEOPLE’s “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, Newton opened up about the joys and challenges of playing a beloved character, the surprising impact of costumes, memorable fan interactions, and his aspirations for the future.

Luke Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, says playing Colin has been a “gift” and he enjoys the opportunity to help tell Colin’s story over the seasons. “There’s always a summer for our characters to grow and evolve,” he says.
As Colin moves from being a teenager into a man, Newton welcomes the challenge that comes with transformation, exploring different versions of the character, taking pleasure in doing so. “Being able to portray multiple different versions of this character is something that I’ve really loved.”
The actor also underlines the importance of costumes in helping him get into character. “It really does just change when you get into those costumes,” Newton explains, and adds that when he puts on Colin’s period clothing, he immediately transforms into his character. The work he put into his sideburns – he admits it took hours to get it right – cements this transformation into his character.
Balancing Fame and Normality: Luke Newton’s Humble Outlook
As much fame Bridgerton Newton is totally down-to-earth, thanks largely to his family and friends. “When I see them, just everything is normal,” he said while explaining his need for normalcy despite attention.
He confessed he’s never really understood the magnitude of success he enjoys, preferring to stay busy with work. “I just do what I do,” he said, grateful for the job and the downtime it gives him.
Newton also talks about an amusing encounter with a fan in Paris, as the driver there mistook him for his actor alter ego in The Crown.
“I just said, ‘Yeah, okay,’ knowing full well that I’m not in The Crown,” he chuckles, finding the experience as an opportunity to keep himself humble and “bring [him] back down to Earth.” It is this earthy sense of self that has kept him from getting carried away with fame.
