Lil Rel Howery is embracing the chaos and joy of family life as he celebrates his role as a father to seven children. At the Micheaux Film Festival in Culver City, California, on October 27, the comedian opened up about his journey in blending families with his fiancée, Dannella Lane, who has four daughters of her own.

Howery told me about his special family setup, which he called a chapter of his life, filled with the great joys and challenges of being part of a big, heterogenous family, open in communication and emotional bonding.

Ventures in a Blended Family

He talks about his joys and struggles as a proud father of seven with his fiancée, Dannella Lane, who has four daughters of her own. He learns how to be a supportive bonus dad in all the complexities that come with a big household. Howery describes it as “beautifully different” and points out the depth of emotional connections and open communication within the family.

He says he is very much looking forward to telling stories about this experience. “A mixed Black family, you know, every day is different, and every day presents a new challenge that he loves,” Howery emphasizes. This has not only made his life richer but also full of material for his future comedy and storytelling projects.

Becoming Friends with Other Dads

At the last Black Love Summit, actor Howery made time with fellow actor Cory Hardrict, who is indeed dealing with his own familial struggles while in the divorce process. Their conversation revealed how vital support among men is, especially in black culture. Howery credits Hardrict for spending so much time with children, saying that no matter what their parents are experiencing, children should always remain first priority.

Howery reflects on the emotional discussions he and Hardrict shared in discussing their experiences as fathers. Such candid conversation in a relaxed setting, such as when watching sports and discussing deeper topics, underscores the value of brotherhood and camaraderie between fathers with similar life experiences, making it a beautiful facet of fatherhood that is rarely discussed.
