Josh Brolin is diving head-first into the nostalgia of his first major film role with the upcoming release of his memoir From Under the Truck, hitting shelves Nov. 19. This candid memoir traces his iconic moments-from The Goonies to No Country for Old Men-with private details about his life that include personal struggles, family, and triumphs.
A 16-Year-Old’s Dream Meets Spielberg’s Realism
While shooting the movie The Goonies, a 16-year-old Josh Brolin would make an ambitious interpretation of what went on in his head playing Brandon to co-writer, and world-famous film director Steven Spielberg. Brolin recalls telling Spielberg, “I think Brandon is freaking out, and the tunnels are inside his mother’s womb, and he’s trying to cut that umbilical cord.”
The famous director had a much simpler take on what happened, though: “He looks at me, and he goes, ‘Yeah, just act. Just say what’s on the page,'” Brolin remembers. Far from offended, the actor admits that Spielberg’s guidance was sound, noting, “He wasn’t being an a–hole, he was right.”
Reflecting on the movie that started his acting journey, Brolin shared, “That was the moment at 16 years old which never should have happened.” The experience came at a pivotal time when he was navigating significant life challenges. “I had been kicked out of my house.”.
I went to live at my father’s place; he was living with someone, so it was like, I gotta get my s— together, he said. Despite getting shut down hundreds of times, he found motivation in proving naysayers wrong. “Going through 350 or whatever auditions and people saying, ‘You should definitely find a different profession. You’re not good at this.’ And loving that challenge.”.
The Goonies Brotherhood and an Unexpected NY Comic Con Reunion
There appears to be no fading link between Brolin and his Goonies costars no matter what number of years went by after the film’s release. When he arrived at the New York Comic Con panel appearance.
He received an unsolicited video message in a humorous tone from Goonies co-star Ke Huy Quan, while the actor playfully asked him in the video message with the question, “Who’s your favourite Goonie? ” Without hesitation, Brolin spoke about what would be their shared bond, answering, “They are all my favourites,” but then to Quan specifically about his incredible comeback.
“But Quan — he came back and won an Academy Award, man,” Brolin said, celebrating his success. Beyond the remembrance of olden days, From Under the Truck promises to give readers a deeper understanding of the multifaceted life of Brolin.
The memoir also describes highs in his career but does not forget to mention his mother’s death and all the battles he had with his addiction. Brolin’s former creative work, Dune: Exposures, revealed his fondness for poetry and photography while giving an imprint of how he portrayed Gurney Halleck.
The memoir will serve fans and readers with a more personal and raw tale, including stories on fatherhood, love, and perseverance.
