The prospect of transferring the torch to a new generation of actors has gained a lot of attention as the entertainment industry continues to experiment with nostalgic reboots and remakes. Lewis Pullman, the adored actor Bill Pullman’s son, has stated that he would think about taking up his father’s role in a possible remake of the iconic movie Casper. He immediately added a disclaimer, though: “I can’t outdo what he did.”
Lewis Pullman Reflects on His Father’s Legacy in Casper
Ahead of Casper’s 30th anniversary next year, Lewis Pullman is thinking back on his father, Bill Pullman, and his “beloved” eerie family movie from 1995. Lewis says he would be open to playing his father’s role as Dr. James Harvey in his new vampire movie Salem’s Lot, which is currently available to stream on Max, in an interview with PEOPLE.
However, it would need to be a very particular situation. Lewis, 31, explains “That’s sacred ground to step on, especially something as beloved as Casper.” “I would [do] a prequel where I play him younger,” he allows.
In Casper, Bill plays Dr. James Harvey, a “ghost psychiatrist” and widower, and his adolescent daughter Kat (Christina Ricci). They move into a house that is plagued by three ghostly uncles, Stinky, Stretch, and Fatso, as well as a nice spirit named Casper. As they attempt to protect his house from a malevolent ghost exterminator, Casper and Kat wind up becoming friends.
A Legacy To Uphold
Is there another 1995 movie of his father’s that Lewis might be willing to develop? The film While You Were Sleeping, starring 70-year-old Bill alongside Sandra Bullock. “I would love to do While You Were Sleeping, but maybe their children that they have … something else happens, where I play their son,” Lewis tells the press.
However, he states, “I would never want to step into the shoes of Pop,” regardless of how his career might intersect with his father’s. “Can’t outdo what he did. I wouldn’t even try.”
In May 2023, Lewis told the media that he grew up in “a real creative family” that includes actor Bill and his older siblings Jack and Mesa, who are “all performers in some realm.”
