In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, actress and model Brooke Shields reflected on witnessing her daughter Grier Henchy, 18, make her runway debut at New York Fashion Week. Shields, known for her iconic roles in Blue Lagoon and Suddenly Susan, shared her admiration and amusement as she watched Grier walk the runway for Tommy Hilfiger. “I was blown away by my daughter. I really was,” Shields admitted, confessing her own limitations as a runway model. Shields herself has never done runway, focusing her modelling career primarily on editorial work.
Shields revealed that Grier’s confidence and openness to learning left her feeling proud. “[Grier] took the schooling from whoever was going to give it to her,” she said, noting her daughter’s dedication to developing a strong work ethic in a challenging industry.
Shields’ Surprising Advice: “Look Hungry and Angry”
Despite her support, Shields knew she couldn’t offer professional runway advice. “How would I even walk like that?” she laughed, acknowledging the difference between print modelling and runway walking. Instead, she gave Grier a humorous piece of advice, recalling, “I go, ‘Look hungry and angry.’” Grier’s response, Shields shared, was less than enthusiastic: “She’s like, ‘You’re no help.’”
Shields’ playful advice highlighted the lighthearted relationship between mother and daughter, with Shields cheering Grier on from the sidelines. Shields’ acknowledgment of her inexperience with runway modelling gave Grier the space to learn and grow on her own terms, creating a dynamic where she could both teach and support her daughter without overstepping.
Shields Embraces Grier’s Ambitions, Despite Initial Reservations
Initially, Shields was hesitant about Grier’s desire to enter the fashion world. She had doubts about the industry’s demands and the pressures of runway modelling. “I fought it for so long,” she explained in a past interview. “She’s interested in the runway, and that’s brutal.” Ultimately, Shields decided to trust her daughter’s instincts and allow her to pursue her dreams. She insisted, however, on setting boundaries: “You’re going to be with an agency, and you’re going to have a great work ethic.”
Shields’ balanced approach has allowed Grier to flourish while maintaining guidance and support. As a mother and mentor, Shields has encouraged Grier’s independence and determination to succeed in an industry that continues to challenge even seasoned professionals.
