If there’s one thing the royal family is good at, it’s following traditions. Despite speculations of not continuing with the decade-long tradition of capturing and sharing portraits of their children, Princess Kate and Prince William have done it this year as well. As he turns 11, pre-teen Prince George poses for his sick mother, Princess Kate Middleton in birthday portrait.
Prince George has undoubtedly had an unforgettable year so far. From sad news like his mother’s cancer diagnosis to enjoying with his sister and father, Prince William at Taylor Swift’s concert and a major soccer championship, Prince George saw it all. Kate Middleton and Prince William shared a new portrait to mark their eldest son’s latest milestone on July 22.

The new photograph, captured by Princess Kate in Windsor earlier this month, continues a royal tradition. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 42, have released portraits of Prince George for his birthday every year since he was a baby. This tradition has also been extended to his younger siblings, 9-year-old Princess Charlotte and 6-year-old Prince Louis.
The new black and white portrait features Prince George looking dapper in a dark blazer and white shirt. In the Instagram Stories version, a friendship-style bracelet is visible on his left wrist.
The bracelet was possibly a keepsake from his thrilling night at Taylor Swift’s London concert in June. Along with the social media post, his parents included a message that reads: “Wishing Prince George a very happy 11th birthday today!”
Photography: the new calling for Princess Catherine
It came as a shock to everyone, when Princess Kate Middleton, wife to Prince William, who is next in line to the royal throne shared her cancer diagnosis. The royal revealed the news of her diagnosis in a video statement on March 22, months after undergoing planned abdominal surgery.
However, Princess Catherine has taken up on a new hobby. In March, Kate issued a rare statement after a photograph, taken by William of her and their children to celebrate Mother’s Day in the U.K., was withdrawn by several news agencies due to concerns about possible manipulation.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused,” she said.
Turns out, it was Catherine herself who edited those photos. From editing the Mother’s day photos to capturing Prince George’s portrait for his birthday, Kate is seemingly enjoying her new hobby.
Prince George will likely celebrate his birthday privately with his family, but he has been seen at a few recent events, including Trooping the Colour on June 15, a Taylor Swift concert with his father and sister on June 21, and a UEFA European Championship game between England and Spain on July 14.
