Seven years ago, on November 27, 2017, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle captured global attention with the announcement of their engagement. Released by Clarence House, the statement detailed their plans to reside in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace and highlighted the couple’s joy, shared by the royal family.
The day included a photocall at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Gardens, followed by an interview that offered a glimpse into their whirlwind romance. However, as Meghan later revealed in their 2022 Netflix docuseries, the seemingly picture-perfect moment felt rehearsed, marking the beginning of their complex relationship with royal life.
Proposal of the Night and a Unexpected Surprise
Harry and Meghan were declared to be in engagement in casual, intimate settings. Reflected on the proposal, Harry said, “Just a standard typical night for us. roasting chicken and having.” Meghan intervened and stated, “Trying to roast a chicken.” The next minute got romantic when Harry surprised her by getting down on his knee to pop the question. “It was so sweet and natural and very romantic,” Meghan added. “He got on one knee,” she added affectionately. Harry reminded them that she didn’t allow him to finish but exclaimed she wanted to say “can I say yes now?” and “she said, can I say yes? Can I say yes?
And then, there were hugs. Later, Meghan told the world more about the surprise engagement through their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan. In the documentary, Harry took a selfie after proposing and shared details from his memoir Spare about how he set up the moment with electric candles and a blanket. “I wanted it to be Botswana, where it all began,” Harry told reporters. So he proposed then asked: “Spend your life with me?”

The Early Years: Familiarization with one another
Their whirlwind relationship was filled with dates, and they made time for one another no matter how much distance came in between, even the times when it was on either end of the time zones between London, where Harry was staying, and Toronto, where Meghan spent most of her days, but according to her:
“We never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other.”.
It was a decision. we knew we were willing to invest in the time and the energy.” Harry shared how adjusting to new time zones and constant new schedules was quite tough but with an underlying commitment for one another made all of it work. Meghan shared, “We had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing.” Harry explained how their relationship was strengthened during that period of privacy. “It’s provided different opportunities.
