The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has imposed a 24-day suspension on boxers Mike Tyson and Jake Paul following their high-profile bout in Arlington. Suspension is a standard procedure after competitors engage in sanctioned fights.
Tyson and Paul Face Suspension After Uninspiring Fight
Tyson, 58, fought for the first time since 2005, while Paul, 27, claimed a unanimous decision victory after eight rounds of boxing.
However, despite the high viewership, commentators criticised the fight for lacking excitement. Additionally, both fighters were deemed to need time to recover under Texas state regulations, which require a three-day rest period after each round.
The Fight That Sparked Debate
The match between Tyson and Paul generated significant attention, attracting over 100 million viewers globally. Nevertheless, the fight fell short of expectations.
Tyson’s energy seemed to dwindle quickly, and Paul, showing control, seized the fight in the later rounds. As a result, Tyson’s early aggression gave way to exhaustion, which allowed Paul to dominate and secure the win.
“I didn’t want to hurt him too much, but I still wanted fans to enjoy it,” Paul stated after the bout. While he apologised for not delivering on his pre-fight promise of a knockout, his victory was seen as an expected result.
Additional Suspensions for Competitors
The fallout from the fight also impacted other competitors on the card. For example, Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor, who fought in a full-distance battle, received a 45-day suspension. Taylor emerged victorious in the bout, winning by unanimous decision.
In the meantime, despite an initial post-fight claim of a headbutt from Taylor, Serrano later clarified her statement, offering congratulations to her opponent. Therefore, the two are now expected to discuss the possibility of a trilogy fight once both competitors have recovered from their injuries.
Mike Tyson and Jake Paul’s 24-day suspension follows a fight that captivated millions but failed to live up to the hype. Consequently, with regulations in place for fighter recovery, the suspended boxers now await their return to the ring after the mandated rest period.
