As the highly anticipated new DC Universe (DCU) takes shape under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the fate of past films and TV shows in the franchise has been a subject of much speculation.
With the debut of Creature Commandos, the adult animated series set to premiere on Max on December 5, Gunn has clarified what will remain canon in the new DCU.
While much of the old continuity will be sidelined, some key characters and events from the previous DC films, including The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, will carry over, though there are a few notable exceptions. Gunn recently shed light on which aspects of the old guard will persist and how the new direction will affect fan-favorite storylines.
What is Canon in the New DC Universe?
With the debut of Creature Commandos on December 5, 2024, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision for the new DC Universe is becoming clearer. Gunn clarified that almost everything from the previous DC movies and TV shows will be wiped out of continuity.
According to Gunn, nothing is definitively considered canon “unless you see it in Creature Commandos” or any future projects that follow in the new DCU. The new show is poised to reset the stage for the future of the DC Universe, with major changes to its storylines and characters.
However, Gunn did hint that there will be some continuity between the old and new universe, particularly with Creature Commandos featuring references to events from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
Gunn explained, “In Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker.” These references will solidify those past events as canon in the new universe, making it clear that certain elements from the previous DC films and shows will still hold weight moving forward.
Peacemaker’s Connection to the New DCU
James Gunn addressed some of the lingering questions surrounding *Peacemaker* and its place in the new continuity. While almost the entire first season is considered canon, Gunn noted one specific exception: the cameo appearance of the Justice League in the Season 1 finale.
This moment features Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash but is part of the old DCU, not the new one. Gunn explained, “The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.” This clarification has helped fans understand that while *Peacemaker* remains largely intact, some adjustments are still to come.
Looking ahead, Gunn confirmed that Season 2 of Peacemaker, which is currently in production, will firmly be a part of the new DCU. The upcoming season will address the issues raised by the Justice League cameo and help clarify the transition between the two versions of the DC Universe.
As Gunn mentioned, “Peacemaker Season 2 is currently shooting and will debut in August, 2025,” and it will be integrated into the overarching narrative of the new DC Universe.
