Illinois Woman Discovers Quadruplet Pregnancy After Visiting Hospital for Sore Throat

Katelyn Yates, 20, thought her hospital visit for a sore throat would be straightforward. Instead, she learned she was pregnant with quadruplets.

A Shocking Discovery During a Routine Hospital Visit

Doctors recommended a pregnancy test before an X-ray, as a precaution. The test came back positive, and her hCG levels suggested multiple foetuses.

“At first, I thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke,” Yates told Today. However, the surprising news became an unforgettable reality for her and her fiancé.

A Complicated Pregnancy Filled With Challenges

As her pregnancy progressed, Yates faced complications, including preeclampsia. The condition caused high blood pressure, liver issues, and kidney problems, putting her at risk.

Doctors performed an emergency C-section at 28 weeks. The quadruplets—Elizabeth, Max, Sophia, and James—were delivered safely but weighed between 1-2 pounds.

Despite challenges, all four babies are thriving. Yates shared, “They’re doing phenomenal. Elizabeth is close to reaching two pounds.”

The Remarkable Odds of Spontaneous Quadruplets

The chance of conceiving quadruplets naturally is less than one in 500,000. Yates’ story is a testament to resilience and medical advancements.

Premature birth, common in multiple pregnancies, can result from various factors. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, and uterine abnormalities.

Yates expressed gratitude for her care team and her fiancé’s support. “Julian was thrilled, which helped calm my nerves,” she said.
