Jamie Oliver’s latest children’s book, *Billy and the Epic Escape*, has sparked significant backlash from Indigenous Australian communities, leading to its swift withdrawal from stores. The book, which features an Aboriginal girl with mystical powers who is placed in foster care, has been criticized for its insensitive portrayal of Indigenous experiences, particularly those connected to the painful history of child removals during Australia’s Stolen Generations.

Both Oliver and Penguin Random House U.K. have expressed regret over the oversight, with Oliver stating his “devastation” at causing offense and the publisher committing to more culturally sensitive practices. The controversy underscores the need for thorough consultation with Indigenous communities when addressing culturally sensitive topics.

Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver Apologizes Over Cultural Insensitivity

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver issued a public apology after the controversy for his children’s book *Billy and the Epic Escape* regarding the way he portrayed Indigenous characters. He said he was “utterly devastated to have caused offense” when added that he had no intention to misinterpret the trauma that Indigenous Australians still face.

It recounts the experience of an Aboriginal girl who possesses supernatural powers and has been condemned for trivializing serious issues tied to Australia’s history of child removals and assimilation policies. Penguin Random House U.K. quickly withdrew it from stores.

In response, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) considered the book culturally insensitive in that it “dangerously trivializes” the trauma experienced by the Stolen Generations. This refers to many Indigenous children forcibly taken away from their families under policies aimed at assimilating them into non-Indigenous communities. Oliver’s statement was accompanied by a recognition to listen and learn from this experience.

Penguin Random House Promises to Get Consultation Process Right

After the public furore, Penguin Random House U.K said that it failed to consult with Indigenous communities in the development of the novel *Billy and the Epic Escape*. It accused its standards of falling short and agreed to withdraw the book as Oliver had suggested it promising better processes to prevent such scandals in the future.

There were criticisms coming in from the activists, who are now of NATSIEC, that the way Aboriginal spirituality is treated in the film is just a comparison and stereotype in the form of mere “magic.” For example, where in the film the characters somehow communicated with animals and other plants.

A utilization of a solitary Indigenous language, Gamilaraay has been criticized because it sidelines the diversity of First Nations languages and cultures in Australia. Penguin Random House will then collaborate more intensively with Indigenous cultural scholars so that all future published works are respectful of the depth and the multiplicity of Indigenous communities.
