John Wayne Gacy, the infamous psychopath kept Merrill at gunpoint for hours torturing him. What transpired was the most intense juxtaposition of feelings that Merrill had ever experienced.

Also, there was some strange affection for Gacy that went along with the fear. He understood the struggles of the murderer which is why he found comfort in himself in spite of being terrified. With time, however, Gacy become jaded with his twisted and dark pastime. Strangely enough, he requested Merrill to take him home. This unexpected twist encouraged Morgan Stanley. In time, he understood this was the only place he would be able to live. By remaining calm under pressure and using his wits, Merrill escaped one of the worst serial killers in America’s history.
