A bone marrow cancer diagnosis has apparently been made for disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who was found guilty of sexual assault. Weinstein, who is currently incarcerated in a New York prison for 23 years, is undergoing therapy for his illness. He is still appealing his convictions, which further complicates his already turbulent personal and legal situation.
Harvey Weinstein Faces Bone Marrow Cancer in Prison
It has been reported that Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. While serving his 23-year term for rape and sexual assault at Riker’s Island in New York, the 72-year-old former film producer is undergoing treatment in jail for chronic myeloid leukemia.
Craig Rothfield, Weinstein’s lawyer and prison consultant, stated in a statement on Monday, October 21 “Craig Rothfeld, Mr. Weinstein’s authorized legal healthcare representative in New York State, expresses profound dismay at the speculation surrounding Mr. Weinstein’s medical condition.”
“It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse and speculation. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.” He further stated.
Legal Challenges Amidst Health Concerns
The news of Weinstein’s diagnosis comes as the 72-year-old has been dealing with a number of health problems lately. Weinstein entered a not guilty plea to a second first-degree criminal sex charge on September 19, his first court appearance following heart surgery. Weinstein is charged with sexually abusing a woman in 2006 at a hotel in Manhattan.
Weinstein was admitted to the hospital in July after contracting double pneumonia and COVID-19. In a statement that several media outlets were able to get at the time, Rothfeld disclosed that he was being treated for “diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid on his heart and lungs, and various other conditions” while confined at the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward.
According to his lawyer Arthur Aidala, who at the time described him as “a train wreck health-wise,” the former movie producer was also admitted to the hospital in April for a “series of tests.”
