Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, he gained fame after auditioning for the British television show The X Factor in 2010, where he was invited to join One Direction. The group finished third on the show but went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands in history.
After One Direction went on hiatus in 2016, Payne launched a successful solo career, signing with Republic Records in North America.

Authorities have confirmed that Payne was under the influence of the hallucinogenic drug Cristal at the time of his death, which likely contributed to his erratic behavior and eventual fatal fall.
Cristal’s Influence on Payne’s Behavior
Police revealed that Cristal, a potent hallucinogen, was in Payne’s system. The drug is known for causing extreme mood swings and aggression, which reportedly led to Payne’s dangerous actions.
Witnesses in the hotel reported him acting erratically, including smashing his laptop and pacing the halls in an agitated state. His behavior raised concerns, prompting the hotel manager to call for emergency assistance.
Autopsy Confirms Cause of Death
Payne’s autopsy confirmed that he died from polytrauma and internal haemorrhage after falling from the third floor. .
Cocaine and drug equipment were also found in his hotel room, indicating a serious struggle with substance abuse in his final days.
In the distressing call made to the police, the manager was heard saying:
“We have a guest who is high and drunk; when he is conscious, he is destroying his room and we need you to send someone, please. We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if his life is in danger.”
Payne, who had battled addiction, leaves behind a seven-year-old son, Bear, with ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole.
