India’s medium-pacer Arundhati Reddy emphasised the importance of improving the team’s net run rate (NRR) in upcoming matches after their hard-fought six-wicket win over Pakistan in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. While the victory marked a positive start, Reddy acknowledged that the team must enhance their NRR to maintain a competitive edge in a challenging Group A.

Reddy’s stellar bowling performance of 3/19 was crucial in restricting Pakistan to 105 for eight at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. However, India’s cautious batting approach nearly jeopardised their chase, before skipper Harmanpreet Kaur steered the team to victory with her experience. Reddy, speaking after the game, stated that while the win was the priority, they are looking forward to improving the NRR in future matches.

Importance of Net Run Rate

Reddy candidly explained the team’s focus on NRR, a crucial factor in determining the semifinalists from a competitive group featuring Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

“We understand the importance of NRR, especially in this group, and it will come into play in the upcoming games,” she said. India’s NRR improved slightly to -1.217 from -2.90 after the win, but it remains behind Pakistan’s -0.555.

Reddy added that India will aim to strike a balance between securing victories and boosting the NRR in future matches.

A Confident Comeback

Reddy’s journey back into the national team after a 3-year absence has been marked by hard work and determination.

The 27-year-old bowler reflected on her personal growth since her last World Cup appearance in 2020. “I’m more prepared now, and my goal is to be the best all-rounder for India.

The last few years were challenging, but I focused on becoming a bowler who can perform in all phases of the game,” Reddy remarked.

Her commitment to improving her skills was evident in her flawless line and length during the match against Pakistan, a testament to her years of preparation.

Despite India’s success, Reddy acknowledged that the team needs to improve their fielding, as a few lapses almost cost them the game. She concluded optimistically, noting that the team is working hard to address these areas and build momentum in the tournament.
