Investigation Findings and Apology

After investigating Abbington’s accusations, the BBC found that some of the allegations—particularly those concerning verbal abuse and harassment—were upheld, even though not all of them were proven true. In a statement issued on September 30, 2024, the BBC thanked Abbington for her bravery in speaking up and admitted that earlier actions to resolve her concerns had fallen short. The statement said, “We want to thank Amanda Abbington for coming forward and apologizing to her.” “We know this would not have been an easy thing to do.”

Shortly after Pernice’s arrival on the show, Abbington voiced her concerns about her behavior, and she eventually pulled out of the competition in week five, citing a “toxic environment.” After going through a number of uncomfortable events that she felt forced to disclose for the benefit of other competitors, she made the decision to submit a formal complaint.

Amanda Abbington’s Response

Abbington described the BBC’s apology as a “vindication” for herself and anyone else who could have encountered similar difficulties on the show. She underlined that coming forward had a high personal risk, including the possibility of being threatened and accused of lying. She expressed relief at the investigation’s conclusion despite these challenges and thinks it would encourage others to speak up.

“This apology means a great deal to me,” said Abbington. The most important thing right now is that the BBC implements the promised improvements and that lessons have been learned.” The BBC has made a commitment to improving its contestant welfare practices. This includes creating new positions that are devoted to mental health care and making sure that production staff is present during rehearsals.

This event highlights the need for further discussion over competitor safety and well-being in reality television, as Strictly Come Dancing gets ready for its forthcoming season. The BBC’s readiness to deal with these problems could be an indication that upcoming seasons will provide a more encouraging atmosphere for all contestants.
