In a remarkable turn of events, Google has reportedly paid $2.7 billion to rehire Noam Shazeer, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence who previously left the company in frustration. Shazeer, known for co-authoring the groundbreaking paper “Attention is All You Need,” which laid the foundation for modern AI advancements, had founded Character.AI after his departure. However, as that venture faced challenges, Google seized the opportunity to bring him back, not only securing his expertise but also licensing the technology from his startup.

The Significance of Noam Shazeer’s Return

Noam Shazeer’s return to Google is seen as a pivotal moment for the company as it seeks to enhance its AI capabilities. His previous criticisms of Google’s cautious approach to AI development raise questions about how his insights will influence future projects, particularly the development of Google’s next-generation AI technology, Gemini.

Noam Shazeer is said to have been so inspired by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt that Shazeer was able to create an AI model that was intelligent enough to match a human. In 2015, Schmidt remarked of Shazeer, “If there’s anyone in the world who can achieve it, it’s him.” Shazeer went on to develop Meena, a chatbot that can converse with people on a range of subjects, two years later, in 2017.”

Implications for Google’s AI Strategy

Shazeer’s reinstatement comes at a time when tech giants are fiercely competing for dominance in the AI landscape. This deal not only reflects Google’s commitment to advancing its AI initiatives but also raises broader questions about spending practices in Silicon Valley as companies scramble to secure leading experts and innovative technologies.

According to the report, Shazeer believed Meena had such promise that it would eventually overtake Google as the primary search engine. Google executives, however, decided it was too dangerous to release due to safety and equity issues.

The story claims that Noam Shazeer, who previously criticized Google for being overly conservative in its AI research, is currently one of three executives in charge of the development of Gemini, the company’s upcoming cutting-edge AI technology. Shazeer’s investment in Character is said to have brought him hundreds of millions of dollars.AI as a component of the agreement
