Michael Strahan is embracing his new title as a grandfather following the birth of his daughter Tanita’s first child, a baby boy named Onyx. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Strahan shared his excitement about becoming a grandparent and the amusing name he has considered for his new role. The former NFL star expressed both joy and disbelief at the idea of being old enough to be called “Grandpa,” leading to some lighthearted moments during the interview.
The Joy of Becoming a Grandfather
Strahan shared his overwhelming happiness at becoming a grandfather, describing the experience as “fantastic.” He recounted visiting Tanita and her boyfriend shortly after Onyx’s birth, where he held the newborn and felt an immediate bond. His enthusiasm for this new chapter in his life was evident as he spoke about spoiling his grandson.
Although he thinks “it’s fantastic” to be her infant boy Onyx’s grandfather, he finds it difficult to accept that he will eventually be old enough to be called a grandfather.
“I went over after I finished up work at Fox yesterday, and I was holding him,” he explained, pretending to cradle Onyx in his arms. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to get you so spoiled and give you back to your parents.'” He then admitted, “It’s the most amazing feeling, but I don’t feel old enough.”
What Onyx is going to call him is the one thing “everyone” has been asking, according to Strahan. He cried out, “I don’t know!” “I almost want to do a survey.” Then Fallon said, “Well, other than Grandpa, correct? similar to Papa?” “Yes,” Strahan replied, “like I don’t know, Papa, Gap-pa.”
A Family Legacy
Fallon and the assembly dissolved into giggles at the freshly created grandpa’s moniker. “That’s hilarious, dude,” Fallon remarked. “But that’s amazing.” With a beautiful smile, he remarked, “I’m so happy for my daughter Tanita and her boyfriend,” adding that Onyx is a “great addition to the family.”
As Strahan navigates his new title, he also reflects on the importance of family. He expressed pride in Tanita’s accomplishments and her journey into motherhood. This moment marks a significant milestone not only for Tanita but also for Strahan as he continues to build a legacy within his family.
