General Motors (GM) has announced plans to lay off 1,695 workers at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed earlier this week. The layoffs will occur in two phases, beginning November 18, 2024, and extending into January 2025.
Layoffs and Production Pause
In the first phase, GM will temporarily lay off 686 full-time workers and terminate 250 temporary employees.
The second phase, starting January 12, 2025, will result in the temporary layoff of 759 additional full-time employees.
These layoffs come as part of GM’s ongoing restructuring and workforce reduction measures, which have affected both production and salaried employees in recent months.
Impact on Kansas Plant Operations
The Fairfax Assembly plant, which currently manufactures the Cadillac XT4, will pause production in January 2025.
While GM plans to resume operations later in 2025, workers will face an uncertain period of temporary layoffs until production of both the Cadillac XT4 and the Bolt EV can be aligned on the same assembly line.
Broader Workforce Reductions
This latest round of layoffs follows GM’s August 2024 announcement that over 1,000 salaried employees would be cut from its software and services divisions globally.
The company continues to restructure its workforce to adjust to evolving market demands and new production strategies focused on electric vehicles.
GM has yet to comment on the specifics of these new layoffs, which signal further challenges for employees in the automotive manufacturing sector.
