Riot Games has announced a significant revamp of the competitive League of Legends scene in Oceania (OCE). These changes are aimed at adapting to the ‘evolving landscape’ and optimizing resource use due to the ‘intensive demands of operating an esports league.’ As a result, the decision appears to mark the end of the League of Legends Circuit: Oceania (LCO).
A New Era for OCE LoL
The company is currently exploring options for a new competitive circuit for OCE LoL, with plans to establish a pathway from OCE into the Asia-Pacific (APAC) League of Legends esports ecosystem by 2025. This initiative is part of a broader restructuring effort that will see the formation of a new league combining teams from Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Japan, Oceania, and Southeast Asia.
The League of Legends esports scene in Oceania has undergone numerous transformations over the years. The first official regional competition, known as the Oceanic Pro League (OPL), was launched in 2015 and featured two splits each year until its dissolution in 2020. Following this, the LCO became part of the Pacific Championship Series (PCS) ecosystem, which also incorporated Japan’s LJL.
The Future of OCE LoL
While specific details regarding the new competitive structure for OCE LoL are still being finalized, Riot Games has indicated that the league will include a hybrid partnership model alongside promotion and relegation. This structure will allow both partner teams and ‘guest teams’ to compete, ensuring that aspiring players and organizations have opportunities to rise through the ranks.
In its announcement, Riot Games expressed heartfelt gratitude to fans and participants involved with the LCO: “Before we get into future plans, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to each and every LCO fan, who made this journey unforgettable. You have been the foundation for the league’s success, fueling every match with your passion and unwavering support.”
The company also acknowledged the contributions of teams, players, staff, and everyone involved in the LCO ecosystem, emphasizing their vital role in developing the league.
