The beloved character of Jesse Williams as Dr. Jackson Avery left the show in 2021 but will make a comeback in the upcoming season. The description promises “Welcome Back” for Jackson, hinting at an exciting storyline for the fan-favorite doctor. Viewers will have to tune in to see how Jackson’s return shakes up the events at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. This news is sure to delight ‘Grey’s’ fans who have missed seeing Jesse Williams on the show. The new season is set to pick up right where the season 20 finale left off, with many storylines still unresolved. Jackson’s reappearance will no doubt add an intriguing new twist to the ongoing drama at the hospital.
Season 21 picks up right where the finale left off
As viewers may remember, at the conclusion of season 20, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo, who will feature in seven episodes of the current season) quit her position at the hospital when Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) found out about her covert Alzheimer’s study. The dispute also targeted Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone).
The next season, which debuts on ABC on September 26, “picks up right where the finale left off and a lot is hanging in the balance,” showrunner Meg Marinis exclusively tells. She goes on, “Everyone’s personal lives are filled with challenges, and on top of that, their jobs are at stake. I can’t wait to see how that all works out for each fan. Regarding Meredith, despite her good intentions, she has stepped over the line with Catherine, and as such, there will be repercussions.”
Tension among the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial escalates in a brand-new, exclusive promo as there is a lawsuit, a physical brawl, and the reappearance of some familiar characters. “Sydney Heron’s back?” Asking, Meredith gets a snarky response from Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who says, “Yes, in all her passive-aggressive glory.”
The snippet teases coming back of Jesse Williams
In the following video snippets, Sydney (Kali Rocha) guides the residents, who were formerly in her shoes during season 2, encouraging them to “heal with love!” Then, Jackson Avery, portrayed by Jesse Williams, a fan favorite, shows there. Meredith says, “Welcome back,” even though he doesn’t appear very glad to be there.
Catherine Fox confronts Bailey in the ensuing drama, asking, “You believe you’re God’s gift to this hospital? You’re just one more medical professional.” Bailey responds to this statement by slapping Catherine across the face. Later in the teaser, when she threatens to sue Meredith and Bailey, she is still under fire. Meredith retorts, “Your lawyers know where to find me,” just before the end of the trailer.
The first look of new season has many well known characters
A first look at the season 21 key art, which has Meredith front and center flanked by some well-known characters including Miranda Bailey, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen), is also exclusively available to PEOPLE in addition to the commercial.
Alongside Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill), Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), and Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales), there is also Meredith’s lover, Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). The new interns, Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd), Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane), and Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), are also visible, along with Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).
Included are Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) and the return of fan favorite Jason George, who will reprise his role as doctor-turned-firefighter Ben Warren on Grey’s Anatomy once Station 19 concludes. Longtime viewers of Grey’s Anatomy will also witness Rocha’s reappearance; she portrayed Dr. Sydney Heron in seasons 2-4 of the show. She filled in for Bailey during her maternity leave and had disagreements with Sandra Oh’s character Cristina Yang on their divergent approaches to medicine.
“It’s obvious that some of our attendees were let go,” Marinis said to Entertainment Weekly. “Sydney was living with Bailey and wearing bright blue scrubs when we last saw her. She may be an attending now, but she has the same persona that enthralled people back then. You should expect some funny interactions between Sydney and some of our newer characters who’ve never met her,” she added. “Her ‘healing with love’ philosophy and her kind of quirky nature is a little different for some.”
